If you're currently using the 4-2-1-3 formation and looking for a way to apply more pressure when you're losing, the 4-3-3(4) is perfect for you. Let’s dive into the details and break down why this formation works so well in high-pressure situations. I’ll walk you through the tactics, player roles, and some key gameplay mechanics to help you get the most out of it.
Build-Up Style and Defensive Approach
Starting with the build-up style, I’m using Balanced in this formation. While I do like Short Passing, Balanced offers a bit more flexibility across the board. The 4-3-3 is naturally more of a counterattacking formation, so having Balanced as your build-up style sets you up perfectly for quick transitions.
For the defensive approach, I’m on 70 Depth, but you can adjust this to whatever feels most comfortable for you. I don’t recommend sitting too deep, though. I’ve grown more comfortable with 70 Depth because I hate defending on the edge of my box. It’s all about finding that sweet spot where your defense is compact but not too passive.
Player Roles and Tactical Breakdown
Let’s break down the player roles and how they fit into this formation. I’ll also include some clips from my Elite Rivals matches to give you a visual idea of the movement and positioning.
Goalkeeper
The goalkeeper is on Sweeper Keeper Plus Plus, but honestly, use whatever role your keeper has. If they’ve got Goalkeeper Plus or Sweeper Keeper Plus, that’s fine too. The key is to have a keeper who can come off their line when needed.
Center Backs
For the center backs, keep them on Defend. You want them to stay in their area and not step out too much. If you use Stopper or Ball-Playing Defender, they’ll tend to push forward, which isn’t ideal here. We need a consistent backline because the midfield and attack are doing most of the work.
Fullbacks
The fullbacks are on Fullback (Defend). They’ll tuck in slightly, which helps maintain a solid defensive shape. If you find your opponent is exploiting the wings, you can switch them to Balanced. This is especially useful against formations like the 4-2-1-3, as it forces the fullbacks to stand in front of the wingers, cutting off easy passes.
I also like using Wing Backs, but Fullback (Defend) is probably the meta choice. It’s the most balanced option and works well in most situations.
Midfield
The midfield is where things get interesting. Let’s break it down:
-
Left Center Mid (Defensive Role): This player’s job is to hold the midfield and defend. You want someone with strong defensive playstyles and the ability to win the ball. Physical presence is a bonus, but not essential. For example, I use Gaby, who has 99 dribbling. His main role is to break up play and recycle possession.
-
Right Center Mid (Playmaker): This player is on Playmaker (Roam). When you’re losing, this role helps apply pressure and overload the opponent’s midfield. Against a 4-2-1-3, this setup can dominate the right side of the pitch.
-
Center CAM (Playmaker): Also on Playmaker (Roam), this player will hover around the central areas, linking play and creating chances. You want someone with good passing, shooting, and playstyles like Finesse Shot Plus. Bonmati is perfect for this role with her Tiki Taka and Technical playstyles.
Attack
The attack is where this formation really shines. Here’s how I set it up:
-
Striker (Advanced Forward - Support): This role ensures the striker presses high and creates space for the wingers. You want someone with good finishing and stamina. I use Pedro, who has a 5-star weak foot, 5-star skills, and Finesse Shot Plus. He’s a beast in front of goal.
-
Wingers (Inside Forwards): Both wingers are on Inside Forward (Roam). This keeps them slightly deeper defensively but allows them to cut inside and create chances. I use Maradona on the right and Ronaldinho on the left. Their attacking AI is incredible, and they pick up great positions.
Substitutions and Bench Strategy
Substitutions are crucial, especially in tight games. Here’s how I manage my bench:
-
Fullbacks: I don’t sub mine because they have Relentless or Relentless Plus, which keeps their stamina high. If your fullbacks don’t have this, sub them out around the 70th minute.
-
Midfield: Pedri is often the first to come off for Pascal Gross. Gross is a fantastic card and works well as a Deep-Lying Playmaker in the center mid role.
-
Attack: Bale comes in for Pedro when I need more pace and physicality. On the left wing, I bring on Rafinha for Ronaldinho to freshen things up. If the game goes to extra time, I’ll refresh the entire front line.
Key Characteristics for Each Position
Here’s a quick summary of what you need from each position:
- Left Center Mid: Defensive-minded with strong tackling.
- Right Center Mid and CAM: Creative, good passing, and shooting.
- Wingers: Finishing and attacking AI are crucial.
- Striker: High stamina and clinical finishing.
- Center Backs: Lengthy is ideal for catch-up speed.
Final Thoughts
The 4-3-3(4) has been one of my go-to formations for years, from FIFA 23 to FC 24. It’s a bit more challenging this year due to the midfield dynamics, but it’s still incredibly effective when used correctly. Give it a try, and let me know how it works for you in the comments. Catch you in the next one!
